10.6.4. Repair of a starter

Before dismantling of a starter be convinced of its serviceability by simple checks.
1. Check ease of movement of the coupling of the drive along a shaft. Turn a drive gear wheel. It has to be turned easily concerning a coupling nave in the direction of rotation of an anchor and should not be turned in an opposite direction.
2. Connect wires for "prikurivaniye" the minus plug of the rechargeable battery removed from the car to the starter case. Connect the second wire one end to the plus plug of the rechargeable battery, and another – to a conclusion of the operating wire of the traction relay. If the traction relay is serviceable, the click will sound and the drive coupling will start. Otherwise the traction relay is subject to replacement.
3. Disconnect a wire from the operating conclusion of the traction relay and connect to the lower contact bolt of the traction relay. The rotor of a starter has to begin to rotate with a frequency more than 5000 min.-1. Otherwise repair a starter.

It will be required to you: keys "on 8", "on 13", screw-drivers with a flat and crosswise edge, passatizh with narrow sponges, the hammer, a tester, a caliper.
1. Remove a starter from the car (see. "Removal and installation of a starter").
2. A key "on 13" turn off a nut of fastening of the tire to a contact bolt of the traction relay.
3. Turn out two screws of fastening of the traction relay...
4.... also remove the relay.
5. Take an anchor from the traction relay...
6.... and returnable spring.
7. A key "on 8" turn out two coupling bolts.
8. Remove a back cover of a starter.
9. Turn out two screws of fastening to a cover of brush knot...
10.... also take brush knot from a cover.
11. Check movement of brushes in the case. They have to move easily, without jammings. Measure height of brushes. If height of brushes is less than 7 mm, the brush knot needs to be replaced.
12. Examine a back cover of a starter. If the plug in a cover is worn-out or on it teases, sinks and other defects are found, it is necessary to replace the plug or a cover assembled with the plug.
13. Separate the starter case (stator) and a forward cover assembled with a reducer.
14. Remove a sealing ring from the stator.
15. Take a rotor from the stator.
16. Examine a rotor. If the collector is polluted or on it there are risks, scratches and other defects, the collector's proshlifuyta a small glass skin. At a considerable roughness of a collector or a vystupaniya of mica between its plates pierce a collector on the lathe and then a proshlifuyta a small glass skin. The collector beating concerning pins of a shaft should not exceed 0,05 mm. Check reliability of the soldering of conclusions of a winding of a rotor to collector plates. Examine a winding on rotor end faces, diameter of a winding has to be less package of iron of a rotor. Otherwise replace a rotor.
17. Examine a condition of a gear wheel of a shaft of a rotor on absence of damage in a look забоин and roughnesses. At an opportunity remove insignificant damages with a fine-grained emery cloth.
18. Check an anchor winding for short circuit by means of the tester included in the mode of measurement of resistance. Resistance has to strive for infinity.
19. Take a drive lever support damper.
20. Take an overlay of a support of the lever of the drive.
21. Take from a forward cover a drive shaft assembled with the coupling of a free wheeling.
22. Examine a forward cover of a starter and at detection of cracks replace it.
23. Remove the lever from the drive coupling.
24. Remove from axes drove three satellites.
25. Take out a basic ball from a drive shaft opening.
26. Check the drive. Teeths of a gear wheel of the drive should not have considerable wear. The gear wheel has to be turned easily concerning a coupling nave in the direction of rotation of an anchor and should not be turned in an opposite direction. If teeths of a gear wheel are worn-out or damaged or the gear wheel is turned in both directions, replace details of the drive or the drive assembled.
27. Shift a restrictive ring on an anchor shaft.
28. Hook the screw-driver...
29.... also remove a lock ring.
30. Remove a restrictive ring.
31. Remove a drive gear wheel with the coupling of a free wheeling...
32.... and solar gear wheel of a planetary reducer.
33. Examine a solar gear wheel. Teeths of a gear wheel of the drive should not have considerable wear. If the basic plug installed in a gear wheel opening is worn-out or on it there were teases, sinks and other defects, it is necessary to replace a solar gear wheel.
34. Examine a drive shaft. On its working surfaces there should not be a considerable wear, zadir, sinks and so forth.
35. Collect a starter in the sequence, the return dismantling, taking into account the following features:
– grease a rotor shaft gear wheel with siliceous General Electric CG321 lubricant or similar;

Prevention
In use the coupling of the drive does not need to be greased. However it is necessary to clear it of dirt. Do not apply to cleaning of the drive of means which can wash up the lubricant put in its coupling.

– oil engine bearings (plugs) in which the starter rotor rotates;
– before installation of the traction relay apply on the surface of the relay contacting to a starter cover from the drive, a thin layer of silicone sealant.
